Living with and beyond breast cancer: Breaking the silence

On Thursday November 19th 2020, Foundation for Cancer Care hosted her first cancer awareness event; a virtual Zoom webinar organized in honor of breast cancer patients and survivors, titled “Living with and Beyond Breast Cancer.” This webinar was hosted in partnership with our sister organization, Lakeshore Cancer Center, Nigeria’s first private health care facility solely dedicated to cancer care, screening and prevention. We also partnered with:

  • The Dorcas Cancer Foundation; a childhood cancer advocacy non-governmental organization founded by Dr. Adedayo Joseph, a clinical and radiation oncologist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
  • The BRICON Foundation; a breast cancer advocacy non-governmental organization and patient support network co-founded by Mrs. Abigail Simon-Hart, a breast cancer survivor and advocate.
  • Lilly Women’s Health Breast Care Center, founded and led by Dr. Lillian Ebuoma, who specialises in Diagnostic Radiology and Breast Imaging and Intervention. The health facility provides quality breast cancer screening, imaging and breast care services to women.

We held the webinar in recognition of “breast cancer awareness” month, celebrated globally in October and it served as a forum for the foundation to:

  • Celebrate and show support to breast cancer patients and survivors,
  • Create awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection,
  • Share the survivors’ breast cancer journey and experience,
  • Debunk myths and misconceptions about breast cancer and,
  • Address any pertinent medical questions about breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment.

The Chairman of Foundation for Cancer Care, CEO of Lakeshore Cancer Center and highly experienced Thoracic Surgical Oncologist and Cancer Epidemiologist, Professor Chukwumere Nwogu introduced the foundation to the participants of the webinar, detailing the foundation’s history and mission and stating the goals and objectives, the foundation intends to carry out.

Breast cancer survivor and retired chartered accountant, Mrs. Ngozi Ifezulike, who received care at the foundation’s sister organization, Lakeshore Cancer Center, shared her breast cancer journey from diagnosis through treatment and underscored the importance of routine cancer screening to promote early detection and better survival outcomes.

Dr. Adedayo Joseph, a clinical and radiation oncologist and founder of The Dorcas Cancer Foundation and Dr. Ugonna Ajoku, a physician, strong cancer awareness advocate and passionate health educator, anchored the “Myths and Misconceptions about Breast Cancer” segment, where they dispelled and debunked the common myths and misconceptions surrounding breast cancer. Nurse Uchenna Iroh, the head oncology nurse at Lakeshore Cancer Center, demonstrated how to perform a breast examination on oneself, using an informative, step-by-step video.

To close the webinar, we had a Q & A segment led by a panel of oncology specialists, Dr. Mutiu Jimoh, a consultant radiation and clinical oncologist at Lakeshore Cancer Center and University College Hospital, Ibadan, Dr. Toyin Shonukan, a medical oncologist   , where the webinar participants had the opportunity to ask any burning medical questions relating to breast cancer and/or other types of cancer.
